Years ago I had a wonderful gray tabby cat named Mindy Kitty. She and I were inseparable until the day I had to put her down for heart problems. I asked her to come back to me if she ever could. She was like my soul mate.
About 7+ years went by. I became active in cat rescue and opened my home as a hospice for sick cats. One day I got an email from a lady asking me to take her cat. I couldn't, for my home was already full and it would have been hard on the ones I already had. The lady and I became email "friends" (she was doing cat rescue, too) and every few months she'd remind me that she still wanted me to take her cat...and each month I'd decline.
Then I got sick and had to stop working for more than 2 months. I went through my pitiful bit of savings. Then the bills got behind, the rent was behind and I was borrowing money to buy food for the cats I had. My email "friend" contacted me and told me that she would give me $500. if I would take in this cat she'd been trying to get me to accept. Broke and desperate, I agreed.
The lady brought the cat over within a week, along with her check. The cat's name was Misty Muffin and was very friendly. But after the lady left a few hours later, the cat began going out of it's way to avoid me like the plague. She wouldn't come anywhere near me, would run away if I walked towards her and wouldn't respond to her name at all.
This went on for about 2 weeks. Finally one evening after I came home from work, I decided to close myself into the bedroom with her and see if she and I could work out our differences. She saw me coming and ran down the hall into the bedroom at the end of it. I quietly entered the bedroom and closed the door behind me. The cat ran under the bed. I then sat on the bed and began speaking in a low voice to her. She bolted out from under the bed and tried to get into the closet but it's doors were shut. She began pacing back and forth, eyeing me suspiciously while I just sat and spoke to her. Then I got an idea. As I watched her pacing, I suddenly said, "Are you Mindy Kitty?". The cat stopped walking and stood still. She stared straight into my eyes. Again I asked, "Are you my Mindy Kitty?". Still staring at me, she took a hesitant step towards me. I then said, "If you're my Mindy Kitty, come up here on my lap." This cat walked straight to me, jumped onto the bed, walked onto my lap and THEN put her paws over my shoulder the way that only Mindy Kitty ever had! I burst into tears, hugging and kissing her. From that day on she only answered if I called her Mindy or Mindy Kitty. She totally ignored the name Misty Muffin. She is still with me today and still my kitty soulmate.
