When I was a teenager I used to live in Nova Scotia, Canada's Ocean playground. One foggy fall day, my best friend Gina and I were visiting with our friend Kelly on Cape Sable Island. We went to Kelly's house that was being renovated after a fire that took place months before. We were in her parents bedroom going through her mother's things who had passed away from cancer a year before. Kelly gave Gina her mother's special soap.
We then left to be dropped off at Gina's sister's house where we were going to have a sleep over. Gina's sister's house was located right off the coast of Cape Sable Island. Kelly decided to go home with her dad. Gina left Kelly's gift of her mother's special soap in the car; stating later she thought maybe Kelly's mother would want Kelly to have the soap. I will never forget the smell of that soap. It had light lavender smell to it.
Gina's sister's house was about 100 years old. It was an old fisherman's house at one time. Very small with low ceilings, when you walk in there's the kitchen and to your right steep stairs that led to the upstairs bedrooms. The staircase had a pantry in it on the side. At the top of the stairs is the masterbedroom then to the sharp left her nephews' bedroom.
In the house on this particular night was Gina and I sleeping in the master bedroom with her nephews sleeping in their room down the hall. Gina's mother was downstairs in the living room sleeping on the couch. We went to sleep and I woke up suddenly in the middle of the night. What woke me up was the strong smell of Kelly's mother's soap just under my nose. I chalked it up to the memory of the smell and then all of sudden I felt afraid. Very afraid.
I slowly turned over to Gina and whispered, "Gina... are you awake?" She whispered back yes. I asked, "I am afraid are you?" She replied with a shakey whisper that she was. We huddled close together hugging each other.
All of a sudden we hear someone running up the stairs. The bed we were in faces the bedroom door. The door was open but only has a view of the hallway to her nephews' rooms, there was no direct view to the stairs which was located on the left. Both of our eyes were glued to the open doorway of the room. We were half sitting up holding each other. The footsteps stopped at the top of the stairs then we heard them run back down. We could not tear our eyes away.
Now we couldn't see who ran up and down the stairs but we concluded it sounded like a tall thin lady. Right away we got up to investigate thinking maybe we were wrong and it could of been her little nephews. We checked their room first and they were fast asleep. We thought maybe it might of been her mom. Gina's mother was a heavyset older woman and we couldn't imagine her running up the stairs lightly...like we just heard but we still hoped it was her.
We woke her mom up and she was furious for it was 3 in the morning. We asked if she had just come up the stairs; she said that she was asleep and not very pleased that we woke her up. We shared our experience with her and she thought we were full of nonsense for there are no such things as ghosts. She angrily told us to stop being so silly and get back to bed.
Life went on and so did a few years. I moved away across the country. I went back to visit Gina. We were up in her room. She asked me if I still remembered the footsteps that we heard at her sister's house. I said I did. She then asked me if I remembered how mad her mom was for waking her that night and how she did not believe us, saying there is no such things as ghosts. I remembered very clearly her comments and her wrath. She then began to tell me that a few months ago that her mother was alone in that house. It was during the day and her mother was sitting in the kitchen at the kitchen table facing the pantry in the staircase, having a cup of coffee.
She claims that all of a sudden she felt afraid and looked up at the pantry. She claims then the pantry door opened up by itself and a tall thin pale lady emerged. She claims the lady was very pale, had an old fashioned white night gown and looked very wet with water dripping from her. She claims the lady looked at her with intense fear, turned and ran up the stairs. The lady then stopped at the top of the stairs and ran back down into the pantry shutting the door behind her. She stated when she got the nerve checked inside the pantry and noone was there.
I lost touch with Gina over the years and wonder if there has been any other sightings of this ghost lady and the story behind it. I also still wonder about the soap smell. Gina had said she too was wakened by the same strong lavender soap smell. Wonder if that was Kelly's mother giving us a warning.
